1PM Left Berkeley, flew San Francisco -(1hr)> Los Angeles -(12hr)> Auckland, NZ
[11/12(Sa) New Zealand]
9AM Auckland -(1hr)> Christchurch -- i liked how clean, peaceful, and safe it is here.
Q1. Are you the first person to go to the South Pole?
=) No, the 1st team walked there in 1911. I saw an exhibit about the Antarctic Expeditions -- can you imagine that they walked 100s of km carrying tons of food, climbing 2800 meters in elevation, taking over a month to reach the Pole... and walking back...?
[11/13(Su) Clothing Distribution Centre]
Tried on the "Extreme Cold Weather" gear -- I weighed ~10 kg (~25 lb) more!
Q2(Meredith,Emma). How many layers of clothes do you have to wear? How many layers of gloves?
=) To board the aircraft for Antarctica, we are required to have:
3 layers on top (undershirt, fleece jacket, red parka)
3 layers on bottom (underdrawers, fleece pants, wind pants)
2 layers of gloves (windproof mitten, furback mitten)
So we don't have to wear everything they give us; it's just best to be prepared for the worst weather!
Q3(Taylor). Do you have to wear special underwear?
=) No, but they gave me 2 pairs of long underdrawers. I had never worn these before, but they're nice :)
