[12/3(Sa) Camp out!]
6:30 woke up. 8:15 meeting. Moved the racks.
12:00 Informed my parents of the camping trip.
4pm Station meeting. 5pm Ate 4 slices of good pizza and icecream to get energy for the night!
7pm We packed our extreme cold weather gears and ready to go!
7:30pm After picking up some materials, we left the station. The snow quickly covered our windshields and froze the wiper. It was a rough bumpy ride! 7:45pm We arrive at the destination. So bright and clear. This car can climb hills and move very fast!
First we begin marking our boundary in case the visiblity gets worse. We found some snow structure the previous explorers must've built...
8pm We're setting up a "Scott's" tent, covering the edges w/ snow so that it doesn't get blown away. Our leader Cecilia showed us knots tricks and how to hold down the tent by burying bamboo sticks w/ strings tied to them deep under the snow.
8:30pm I'm about to lift a snow block we cut out with a saw...
to make a wind wall between the tents so that we can set up smaller tents behind the walls. I'm amazed how the snow blocks keep their shape!
We set up smaller "mountain" tents downwind from the walls we built.
10:15pm Still working. My nose is not running -- it's my moist breath freezing!
11:30pm A break w/ hot split pea soup.
Full halo around the Sun! Beautiful "sun dogs" on the sides.
0:00 Cecilia asked us if anybody wants to dig a trench to sleep in instead of sleeping in the tent. I was the only one to say yes. Then a few others decided to try as well. It was so fun to dig the trench!
I'm poking out of my trench; big Greg has to dig a bigger hole next to me. Greg built a trench right next to me. He's quite a bit bigger than me.
Here i'm lying in a cave i made. It was a lot of work to dig deep enough for my height -- never felt so tall in my life!
Lying flat, looking up from my trench -- i see a rainbow from the sun.
From the end of the cave, looking back out.
The thickest blanket i'll ever have! The 2 pockets i dug on the sides are for cold air to sink in.
Almost done with my trench; i'm looking up at the halo around the Sun.
Laid sleeping pads and a sleeping bag.
On the site, we even had a bathroom! Turns out that we just pee in the snow... But the other stuff we take home. My "normal" water is freezing!
0:30 I walk away a little bit to see our camp site. It's now so clear that i could see the station 4km away... 1am Everyone else gone to sleep. Time for my adventure! 1:15 I begin walking away. Very neat windscapes.
Some parts are very smooth.
1:40 I finally reach the end of the skiway, 4 miles from the station. The station and our campsite in distance. Nothing else. video (4MB)
1:55 I start walking back. video (19MB) Looking upside down between my legs. I always like doing this. I also walked on my hands and looked back. walking video (8MB)
2:05 An accident! I dropped my snack bag and spilled my snack! I felt bad to spill on this clean land.
At least i have to take some artistic(?) photos at this occasion... Chocolate chips, nuts, raisins....
2:30 Finally back to our campsite. Going to sleep now, even though i'm not so sleepy yet.
[12/4(Su) Sleep!]
6:50 My feet got so cold (becuase it got sweaty from all the walking) that I could hardly sleep!
9am All the Happy Campers!
10am Tried our radio.
11am Looking out from my trench bed.
11:15 All packed up and ready to leave. Again on this car.
12:00 Returned to the station.
1pm The Happy Campers had lunch together to debrief.
2pm Went to sleep in a warm bed.
6pm Woke up, felt like i had been dead for a while.
After dinner, Clem gave a great talk about cosmology.
