Dear Underground Scientists,
Following the very well attended and successful town meeting in
November in Washington it became very clear that:
1) there is an excellent scientific program for DUSEL and one that is
in immediate need for underground space to advance our fundamental
knowledge about the universe, about the earth below us, about life on
earth, and to advance forefront engineering,
2) there is a very devoted and enthusiastic community of scientists
and educators proposing a very comprehensive set of experiments and
uses for Homestake,
3) that the time scales to obtain the maximum impact on science and
the greatest benefit to the scientific community will be challenging.
The Homestake facility design is advancing well, however the facility
is now in a position to require detailed experimental information to
complete the design and the MREFC proposal for review.
To help coordinate and guide the process of advancing proposed
experiments, the S-1 PIs, in consultation with the Homestake PIs, the
NSF program officers, and other senior personnel have established a
committee to fulfill these roles -- The DUSEL Experiment Development
Committee (DEDC). The membership of this high level committee is:
Steve Elliott
Derek Elsworth
Larry Murdoch
Tullis Onstott
Hank Sobel
The primary responsibility for the DEDC is to coordinate the work of
the working groups and the experimental proponents as they develop
the necessary components of project design and development for each
of the experiments, as defined in the NSF Large Facilities Manual
(LFM). The DEDC will coordinate the communication between the
experimenters and the Homestake Facility Team (Lesko, et al.) to help
ensure that the requirements of individual experiments are properly
identified, and adequately integrated into the facility design. The
ultimate goal is to prepare a compelling MREFC proposal fully
integrating the facility and the science.
We wish to express our gratitude to these scientists for committing
some much of their time for the good of all of DUSEL's experiments
and collaborations. We anticipate the DEDC will announce their plans
for maintaining the momentum gained at the November meetings and
establishing the communications, meetings, etc. necessary to assembly
this work early in the new year. This team has a combined record of
over 100 years in accomplishing world-class underground science.
Together with the Homestake PIs and with the enthusiastic support of
our community, these scientists are very well placed to make our
DUSEL dream a reality.
Best wishes for the holiday season. Hopefully, you will have time to
disconnect and to spend quality time with your family.
