We have just posted on http://www.dusel.org a preliminary program of
the DUSEL solicitation 1 workshop which will take place in
Minneapolis from July 22 to 24. We would like to urge you to
participate!

Your participation is all the more important because of the recent
developments. In particular, the distribution of Solicitation2-panel
preliminary reports on individual-site proposals asking for comments
have generated a lot of discussions in the community. Though the S1
process should not be influenced by any decisions, it is obvious that
the choices being made will have a significant impact on the S1
process and direction it will take.

Our S1 mission remains the same however, even if the context seems to
have changed:

-- to unify the community behind the idea of multidisciplinary,
American Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory;

-- to develop a compelling scientific justification for such a
laboratory, cutting across our many disciplines;

-- to spell out the infrastructure requirements for such a laboratory
that will address the needs of a broad cross section of science over
the next 20-30 years and complement other facilities worldwide.

These are the points around which the current program of the
workshop has been built.

Discussions in the coming weeks, and hopefully the NSF decision, will
allow us to sharpen the focus of our work and to modify the workshop
program accordingly. It is clear in any case that the workshop will
be a pivotal moment in our process: we will have to decide what is
the best way we can promote our common dream.
