The homepage for the Supernova Cosmology Project, the scientific research program on which this activity is based, has current information about the measurement of the age fo the universe from observations of supernovae. A hands-on activtiy related to Part 2 of this activity can be found here. REFERENCES The Imagine the Science! sites below provide very good background information for these activities: The Origin and Desnity of the Universe page provides a good general overview of the expansion of the universe. The Size and Age of the Universe page is more detailed discussion of the age of the universe. The Spectral Analysis page describes what spectra are and why they are useful. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The Desktop Stars laboratory was orginally designed by Storn White and Roy Therrien, for use at Longfellow Middle school in Berkeley California, as part of the Center for Particle Astrophysics' K-12 education outreach program.
