Internet Research Project: New Discoveries in Science

For this project, you will write a report about a scientific discovery that has been made in the last five years. Which discovery? That's for you to find out!

Many exciting events have taken place in recent years in a range of scientific fields, such as bio-medicine, space exploration, environmental studies, archaeology, and more. You have probably heard and read about some of them in the media.

Your first step in this project is to identify a recent scientific discovery that you want to learn more about. That will require some research! The Internet can be a powerful research tool. There are many web sites that offer a great deal of information about science. Some of this information is so new it is not yet available through other sources, such as text books.

How do you find these web sites? There are many paths you can follow on the Internet and it takes practice to get the hang of it. To get started on this project, point your browser at http://cfpa.berkeley.edu/Education/IUP/IUP.htm.

This takes you to the Center for Particle Astrophysics School Page. By reading this page, you'll find out about the research going on at the Center for Particle Astrophysics, a research center funded by the National Science Foundation. As you read this page, click on the underlined words; you'll link to a Glossary that will give you their definitions. Before you leave this page, be sure to click on "Links for Students." It will guide you to some excellent resources for this project. Check them out and see where they lead!

Here is the assignment:

  1. Use the Internet to identify a recent scientific discovery that interests you. You are not limited to the web sites suggested under "Links for Students." Be adventurous!
  2. Once you've selected your topic, continue to use the Internet to learn:
  3. Write a one-page report about the discovery you've researched. If you have access to a printer, include relevant illustrations, charts or photos that you found on the web in the course of your research.
  4. Have a great time learning about science!
